Don’t Be a Cheater—EAT KETO PIZZA

Deciding to try out the keto diet might feel intimidating upfront. But what if we told you that you can reasonably enjoy mouthwatering, cheesy keto pizza without having to worry about kicking your body out of ketosis?

Game changer, right?!

We firmly believe that dieting shouldn’t be about deprivation. Self-improvement can be difficult at first, but it should be enjoyable, too! But in order to find joy in the keto diet journey, one of the first things we have to come around to is the truth that healthy food tastes great! And as far as we’re concerned, that goes for keto pizza.

Is it Okay to Have Cheat Days On Keto?

To understand why cheat days on keto are a bad idea, we have to chat about the basics of ketosis. Ketosis is a metabolic state your body reaches when it switches from burning carbs to burning fat for fuel. “Cheat days” or “cheat meals” often involve binging on sugary or otherwise carb-filled foods that can kick your body out of the ketosis state.

So why is popping in and out of ketosis a problem? Well, for starters, it can rapidly reduce your weight loss progress. After your body starts fueling with carbs again (which can happen with just one splurgy meal!), it can take up to a week to get your body to switch back to its ketone energy source. Plus, relying on cheat days also prevents you from fully embracing your keto diet. Remember needing to come around to the idea that healthy food tastes good? Yeah, cheat days are the saboteurs of a healthy eating mindset!

While cheat days aren’t really an option while on the keto diet, delicious food that feels splurge-worthy IS.

Can You Eat Pizza On a Keto Diet?

What Is the Best Keto Pizza Crust?

The best keto pizza crust will vary based on what type of pizza you’re going for. Check out our lists of more traditional keto pizza crusts, vegetable-based keto pizza crusts, and meaty pizza crusts!

Bread-Like Pizza Crust Options

  • Cloud Bread Pizza Crust—Made of just cream cheese and eggs, this fluffy, easy keto pizza crust will likely feel most familiar if you’re longing for the real deal.
  • Almond Flour Pizza Crust—Almond flour is a common go-to for low carbers, as well as paleo and gluten-free dieters. Using it here can result in a crispy keto pizza crust.
  • Coconut Flour Pizza Crust—Coconut flour is a great alternative to almond flour that can produce a thick, chewy pizza crust that’s even lower in carbs!
  • Chaffles—How about trying out a chaffle as your pizza crust? The cheese is already there, so just pile on the toppings, pop them under the broiler, and you’re good to go!

Vegetable Based Low Carb Pizza Crusts

Make sure you check your macros before diving in on a full-blown vegetable base for your keto pizza. Most keto dieters need to stay under 50 total grams of carbs each day!

  • Zucchini Pizza Crust—Go for a straight-up zucchini pizza boat or shred and drain to use as a pizza crust mix-in.
  • Eggplant Pizza Crust—Just slice and grill or bake to serve up under your favorite toppings!
  • Portobello Mushroom Pizza Crust—Again, these serve as a super quick and easy keto pizza crust, and they’re great for customization and eating on the go!
  • Spinach Pizza Crust—A great way to get in your greens and try something totally new, like this chicken, feta, and walnut pizza with a spinach crust.
  • Cauliflower Pizza Crust—Keto cauliflower pizza crust has been the number one pizza crust alternative for several years, and there are plenty of ways to create it yourself using just riced cauliflower and eggs with cheese and spices. However, you can also pick up a gluten-free cauliflower pizza crust at many grocery stores now.
  • Broccoli Pizza Crust—Yep, even broccoli has made its way into our pizza dreams and is just as easy to pull together as a cauliflower pizza crust.

Meat Based Low Carb Pizza Crusts

  • Ground Beef Pizza Crust—This would make a delicious, high-protein pizza crust perfect for topping with a Mexican cheese blend, green peppers, avocado, tomatoes, and cilantro.
  • Ground Chicken Pizza Crust—Think a little sugar-free BBQ sauce for a meaty, keto barbecue chicken pizza.
  • BACON—That’s right, use woven bacon squares as a crispy keto pizza crust under a pile of baked brussels sprouts, a few apples, and a little red wine vinegar for a whole new level of pizza goodness.

Which Keto Pizza Sauce Is Best?

We love a classic homemade tomato pizza sauce because it can be made sugar-free, which is the problem with most store-bought pizza sauces: HIDDEN SUGAR. All you have to do is simmer tomatoes, herbs, and spices for about 10-15 minutes to thicken it up and you’re good to go.

But if you’re looking for a keto white sauce for your pizza, you could try a yummy keto recipe with plenty of full-fat cream and cheeses!

Keto Friendly Pizza Toppings

Remember that keto and low carb diets are similar but not the same. Keto requires that you keep your carbohydrate intake to just 5% of your calories each day and that means getting a little pickier when it comes to things like veggies on your keto pizza. As for the rest of it—think cheeses, meats, herbs, etc—you basically have a green light!

  • Ground beef
  • Ground chicken
  • Grilled chicken
  • Rotisserie chicken
