Tips to Pan Fry Steak in a Skillet

You don’t need a grill to get a perfectly cooked steak at home, but there are some things you should know before you attempt the task.

  • Start with a cut of steak that is 1-1.5” thick.
  • Pat the meat dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture. This helps it brown better.
  • Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
  • Use a cast-iron or other very heavy pan.
  • Heat the pan over medium-high heat until it is VERY hot.
  • Leave it alone! You only need to move the steak when it’s time to flip it (after about 3-4 minutes).
  • Use tongs to turn the steak.
  • Allow the meat to rest for five minutes before slicing and serving.
