“Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” - T.S. Eliot

The word risk sounds frightening. It implies a loss of control, and the possibility of failure. But it also offers the possibility of great reward. When we take risks, we open ourselves up to the possibility of growth and success along with the possibility of failure. Make 2017 a year to step out of your comfort zone by taking risks.

Risks Can Pay Off

Risks can often lead to positive outcomes. If you ask anyone who has achieved great success in any area, they will tell you that they also took big risks along the way. The fear of failure is often what stops us from pursuing our dreams. However, when we take risks we often learn new skills that we would not have acquired otherwise. It stretches us beyond our comfort zone and helps us grow. Whether it is making a change in your career, starting a new hobby that intimidates you a little, or entering into a new relationships, risks can often lead to some of the most rewarding experiences in life.

Failure Can Lead to Great Success

Most people have heard the famous story about Thomas Edison’s repeated failures in attempting to invent the light bulb. He failed time and time again in his quest, but he never gave up. When Edison was interviewed by American Magazine in 1921, he was quoted as saying, “I never allow myself to become discouraged under any circumstances. I recall that after we had conducted thousands of experiments on a certain project without solving the problem, one of my associates, after we had conducted the crowning experiment and it had proved a failure, expressed discouragement and disgust over our having failed ‘to find out anything.’ I cheerily assured him that we had learned something. For we had learned for a certainty that the thing couldn’t be done that way, and that we would have to try some other way. We sometimes learn a lot from our failures if we have put into the effort the best thought and work we are capable of.”

Risks Are Good for You

Taking risks in life is good for you. It helps you to grow, and pulls you outside of your comfort zone. It may seem scary because you never know the outcome, but avoiding risks means that you stay stagnant. Failure may seem like an undesirable outcome, but it can still teach us lessons we would not have learned otherwise. We can gain new experiences and learn new skills that will help us succeed in the future.

If you have been wanting to take a risk but are afraid of failing, don’t let your fear hold you back. Just because the outcome is unknown doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take a chance. Let 2017 be the year that you take risks and give yourself a chance for success.
