Your morning routine sets the tone for the rest of your day. When you start your morning off on the right foot, you are setting yourself up for success. When you do this day after day, it adds up to a more successful and productive lifestyle. Create an effective morning ritual and boost your productivity and happiness.

Build Healthy Habits

Our habits determine our actions. When you develop healthy habits, you can support a healthier lifestyle effortlessly. The less you have to think about making healthy choices, the easier it will be to maintain and grow healthy behaviors. Use what is referred to as a habit stack to develop new habits.

A habit stack is simply layering one healthy habit on top of another. Pick one habit that you want to develop and focus on it for a month. Once that habit has become second nature continue doing it, but choose another habit to layer on top. Keep gradually layering on new habits and watch your life transform over time. Many small habits can add up to large changes in the long run.

Keep Decisions to a Minimum

Decisions can sometimes be paralyzing. When faced with multiple choices, it is easy to spend so much time debating that it becomes a giant time suck. Whether it is your daily outfit, or breakfast choices, sticking with the same option day in and day out can help make your morning go smoother. In an article on the Huffington Post, Cathryn Lavery argues for eliminating choices, stating, “We only have a certain amount of energy and willpower when we wake up each morning, and it slowly gets drained away with decisions. This is especially true if you’re making hundreds of small decisions in the morning that mean nothing yet will affect how you make decisions for the remainder of the day. Try to have the first hour of your day vary as little as possible with a routine.”

Plan Your Day

We all have tasks that we want to accomplish each day. However, without a plan we can often get sidetracked. Start your day by making a list of your highest priority tasks. List them in order of importance so you can easily tell what to tackle first. Don’t fall prey to creating a never ending to-do list. Keep the list of important goals to 3-5 items tops. You can always add in smaller, less important tasks once your major goals have been accomplished. However, making the list too long to start can divide your energy in too many different directions and make it difficult to get anything done.
