Don’t Fear Failure

“When you take risks you learn that there will be times when you succeed and there will be times when you fail, and both are equally important.” - Ellen DeGeneres

Let’s face it: Risks are risky! Not everything we do will succeed or take off, especially on the first try. But even our failures can teach us something. It’s important to analyze our misses for why they did not succeed–and then see how to improve on the next try.

Take Chances

When you talk to successful people, one of the common themes you will hear is that they stepped out of their comfort zones, and took chances. Think of what you have been dreaming of trying for a long time, but haven’t taken action on. Visualize what it would be like if you did take steps to achieve it. How would your life be different? Would you be more fit, or more financially secure? Maybe you would deepen your relationships or receive a promotion at work. Take the time to be clear on the benefits of pursuing your dreams.

Once you have determined the benefits, it is time to take action. Come up with a plan for how you are going to achieve your goals. What will it take to make your dreams a reality? Write it down.

Next, break it down into baby steps. What small steps can you take starting today to begin working on your goals? When you break down a larger goal into smaller steps it seems less intimidating, and you are more likely to take action. By taking small steps each day towards your goal, you are more likely to take chances that you wouldn’t have taken otherwise.

Learn From Failure

Of course, not every endeavor will immediately result in success. Sometimes it takes many tries before you finally get it right. Failing to reach a goal does not make you a failure as a person.

Take a look at your results and try to identify what you did well. These are the things worth repeating in the future. Next, look at what went wrong. Why did it go wrong? Is there anything you could have done to prevent it? How can you keep the same thing from happening again in the future? There is always a lesson to be learned from failure. These lessons can sometimes be the greatest stepping stones to our future success, so don’t give up just because things didn’t go as planned.

Start Today

Sometimes our biggest failures are not the result of what we have done, but rather what we haven’t done. We are so paralyzed by the fear of failure that we never take action. It is only much later that we finally realize that our lack of action was a bigger disappointment than any possible failure would have been.

Don’t forgo your dreams and live a life of regret. Start taking action today to achieve the life you have always wanted.
